By Dr Bob Sandor

Blood banks across the world have the not so envious task of maintaining blood types for various needs. Besides hospitals, several organizations specialize in blood donation drives and then proceed to preserve them for use in the near future. The right means of preservation is absolutely essential in order to prevent any untoward reactions in the patients it is being administered to. After the process of collection is done, it is the right means of laboratory refrigeration that plays an important role in preserving the quality of the blood.

Blood is drawn in pints from individuals. If not used immediately, they are then broken down into various components like red blood cells, plasma, platelets etc. This is done through the process of centrifugation. The benefit here is that each of these components can be used to cater to the needs of several different patients. This makes the donation of blood more worthwhile.

Blood that needs to be stored in a laboratory refrigerator has to be done so at just the right temperature. The refrigerator must be checked for any deficiencies before the blood is put into it. There should also be an alarm system in place that will alert laboratory staff should there be even a slight change in temperature. Ignoring this could result in loss of viability of the blood deposit. There should be a single person appointed to maintain the blood donation storage refrigerator.

Temperature control is of vital importance and there should be round the clock temperature checks. A temperature chart has to be maintained and this has to be placed in plain sight on the door of the fridge. Good thermometers need to be placed in the laboratory refrigerator for this. A smart idea would be to use maximum and minimum thermometers. This way you can judge the fluctuations in temperature.

Domestic refrigerators are not recommended for storage of blood. But in the dire case that they are, the donated blood has to be kept away from the freezer compartment of the fridge as well as from the front door. These are two areas where there is a maximum of temperature change and this can affect the quality of the blood. In a domestic refrigerator, temperatures have to be constantly checked and maintained. This is done by adjusting the temperature knob on the inside.

Another aspect that needs looking into when it comes to safe preservation of blood is the blood bags that are used for collections. Blood donations are taken in sterile bags. These bags have to be sent periodically for quality control. The possibility of bacterial growth will be eliminated here. The sterility of the blood is also taken care of.

Certain other pointers to keep in mind are that the laboratory fridges should not be moved around. A designated spot should be settled on. Blood is preserved with certain reagents which also require refrigeration. Under no circumstances should they be placed in the same refrigerator. Provisions also have to be made for alternate power supply. Everyone concerned with the blood bank unit has to be aware of the protocol involved in case of a power failure. Besides the incorporation of an alarm system it is also necessary to have people manning the alarm at all times.

The demand for donated blood is constantly on the increase. The proper preservation of blood is therefore essential to making every pint of donated blood count.

On October 14, 2008, Canadians will be heading to the polls for the federal election. New Democratic Party candidate Don Davies is standing for election in the riding of Vancouver Kingsway.

A lawyer, he has spent the last 25 years fighting for human rights. A two-time student government representative, Davies was involved in the anti-apartheid, third world and peace movements. Admitted to the Alberta Bar in 1989, Davies and family moved to Vancouver in 1991, where he became the Director of Legal Resources for Teamsters Canada (Local 31), the next year. He is a long-time volunteer for children’s charity Variety, is Chair of the Parent Advisory Council at Mount Pleasant school, and a Director of the Meridian Cultural Society, among other things.

Wikinews contacted Don Davies, to talk about the issues facing Canadians, and what they and their party would do to address them. Wikinews is in the process of contacting every candidate, in every riding across the country, no matter their political stripe. All interviews are conducted over e-mail, and interviews are published unedited, allowing candidates to impart their full message to our readers, uninterrupted.

The riding is vacant, after Conservative Minister of International Trade David Emerson’s resignation. Emerson was elected in 2004 as a Liberal, serving as the Minister of Industry. Two weeks after re-election in 2006, he crossed the floor to join then-new Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who had won a minority government. Emerson was the first MP in Canadian history to cross the floor before a new government was sworn in. He has stepped down, after pressure from other parties.

Besides Davies, major party candidates include Liberal Wendy Yuan, Conservative Salomon Rayek, and Green Doug Warkentin. Also putting their hat in the ring are Matt Kadioglu (Libertarian), Kimball Cariou (Communist), and Donna Peterson (Marxist-Leninist).

For more information, visit the campaign’s official website, listed below.

This Saturday at 11 am, Davies will host NDP leader Jack Layton in the Commodore Ballroom at “rally4change”.

After windy and stormy conditions in Florida prevented its planned landing at Kennedy Space Center, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) decided to redirect the space shuttle Endeavour to California. It touched down successfully at Edwards Air Force Base at 1:25 p.m. local time, or 21:25, November 30, 2008 (UTC).

NASA normally prefers to land space shuttles at its home base, Kennedy Space Center. In this case, NASA will have to transfer Endeavour atop a jumbo jet from California to Florida at an estimated cost of US$1.8 million.

NASA had launched mission STS-126 on November 14 with eight astronauts led by Commander Christopher J. Ferguson. The mission was intended to make improvements to the International Space Station, including a new bathroom, sleeping quarters, and urine recycling system. The crew also successfully cleared metal shavings from a jammed solar wing rotary joint, which had affected energy production.

Upon the landing, Mission Control radioed, “Welcome back. That was a great way to finish a fantastic flight.”

“And we’re happy to be here in California,” replied Ferguson.

Olympic Growth Expected for Brazil s Real Estate Market

by

Melissa Chappell

The recent news that Brazil is to host the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro extends as not only fantastic opportunities for the country in the sectors of economy, tourism, infrastructure and sporting awareness, yet also foreign investment.

Brazil won the victory to host the Olympics against Chicago, Madrid and Tokyo, all located in countries that have hosted the games in the past. Following three previous attempts to become a host country, Brazil has finally won. Especially beneficial to Brazil is the Olympic bid win following the FIFA World Cup host position. The two highly important sporting events will be held within two years of each other, creating a wealth of growth opportunities throughout the country.

Having been positioned as one of the world s largest economies for several years, predictions on economic growth for 2010 has began to soar following the Olympic hosting announcement. Even the Sao Paolo stock exchange has seen impressive growth in the days immediately following the announcement, especially in companies relating to tourism and infrastructure.

The growth of Brazil s economy will assist with continued strength in the country s real estate market. These increases are beneficial to investors for strong and steady capital appreciation potential.

Tourism clearly receives immediate benefits from the sporting events, set to increase considerably during the lead up. Accommodation and transport are being upgraded to cope with the demands of mass tourism from hosting major worldwide sporting events. The benefits of renewed interest in the region and continued mass market opportunities will assist buy-to-let investors, along with improving exit strategies to early investors.

Renovations and upgrading of airports around the country are being planned, along with new transport networks such as the high speed trains between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo. Modern infrastructure developments have so far only been carried out in the north-east, where recent interest in tourism and real estate investments have been attracting strong influxes of European and North American investors.

The infrastructure developments will provide long awaited upgrades around the country, enabling improvements and modern construction. All of the upgrades, tourism, economic growth and awareness will be highly beneficial for present and future real estate investors to the country. Infrastructure and construction will also benefit the domestic population, assisting the growing nation of increasingly middle class residents.

Considered to present an important transformational opportunity for foreign investment in Brazil, the expected influx of buyers in the coming years will assist with bringing Brazil into an established market status.

Sales of existing homes in the U.S. fell 9.6% in February, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) said today, in a sign that the U.S. housing market is still depressed. The figure was worse than the 3.9% decline anticipated by the economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires and questions whether the U.S. housing market is beginning to recover or will continue to fall.

We have an uneven, choppy recovery. Hopefully it is a recovery …

A combination of foreclosures and short sales, where the mortgage holder sells the house for less than owed on the mortgage, accounted for almost 40% of the sales.

Millions of foreclosures have forced down home prices and the number of foreclosures are predicted to rise this year. The inventory of existing homes listed for sale rose 3.5% at the end of February, a 8.6-month supply at the current sales rate. As more homes are listed in the spring, the inventory of houses for sale will probably increase. A five or six month inventory is usually considered a healthy balance between supply and demand.

According to Moody’s Analytics, another 3.6 million bank-owned homes and possible foreclosures will be added to the inventory by 2013, adding to the 6.7 million home foreclosures since 2006. Thus housing inventories will probably continue to remain high, delaying the point when prices stabilize. The median sales price in February fell 5.2%, down to a price level not seen since April 2002.

“We have an uneven, choppy recovery,” said NAR’s chief economist Lawrence Yun. “Hopefully it is a recovery that is taking place.”

Automobile industry pioneer, John DeLorean, died Saturday in a New Jersey hospital by complications from a stroke.

DeLorean was born in 1925 in Detroit, Michigan to European immigrant parents. He received an education in automotive engineering and quickly rose through the ranks of Packard and later General Motors (GM). DeLorean was credited with the development of the Pontiac GTO, which helped introduce the era of “muscle cars”. By 1965, DeLorean led the entire Pontiac division, and four years later was promoted to the prestigious position of leading GM’s Chevrolet.

In 1973, DeLorean quit General Motors and started his own company, the De Lorean Motor Company. The company’s product was the DMC-12, an unusual car featuring an unpainted, stainless-steel exterior and gull-wing doors. The company started production in 1981 but failed less than two years later, having produced under 9,000 vehicles. Despite the company’s failure and the car’s dismal sales, the car itself gained a cult following after the release of the 1985 movie Back to the Future which featured the car as a time-travel machine.

DeLorean himself was in nearly as much trouble as his company. In 1982 he was arrested for attempting to sell $24 million worth of cocaine to undercover police, and after his company’s failure, he became involved in a multitude of lawsuits alleging investor fraud. Though DeLorean successfully resolved the cocaine case after claiming entrapment, his other legal cases would drag on until 1999, when he declared bankruptcy.

Home alarm systems are available with various levels of technology and a wide range of prices. A basic home alarm system consists of control panel attached to sensors either through wires or some type of wireless connection which is designed to detect the opening of doors and windows. More sophisticated home alarm systems use infrared technology to detect motion from an intruder. While some home security systems are designed to detect only intruders, many other security systems are designed to detect fires, or provide medical monitoring.

The quality of a home alarm system can vary a great deal, depending on the sophistication of the equipment and the experience of the installer. The most basic system can be installed by a home owner and typically consists of window and door sensors which will create loud noises when they are disturbed. This type of system is simply a home alarm system designed to rouse a homeowner to the possibility of an intruder. A more sophisticated system would have a professionally installed system which would cause an alarm notification to go out to a monitoring company who would then be responsible for alerting the police or other emergency personnel. The next level of a home security alarm system would contain fire detection, overall emergency monitoring, glass breakage sensors, and also motion detectors. Higher priced security alarm systems utilize wireless technology instead of the old style wire connections to connect the control pad to the various sensors. Some higher priced home security systems also include a two-way speaker so that the homeowner can speak with the monitoring company, which is especially helpful during a medical emergency. Most control pads also have codes that are used by a homeowner to set and deactivate a home alarm system. The most sophisticated home security systems also utilize outdoor motion detectors, but these must be highly sensitive to be able to differentiate between a human intruder and a small animal. The costs of outdoor detectors of this quality is very high. If outdoor motion detectors are poor quality, the number of false alarms will be quite high. Outdoor motion detectors and security cameras are available, but these are quite unusual in the average home and are typically installed for large estates. In addition to the basic cost of installation, there are also monthly monitoring fees for the security systems.

One major consideration in purchasing a home security system is the quality of the monitoring system, which is sometimes overlooked when a homeowner focuses more on the technology of the security system. Many homeowners complain about slow response times. It is always important when considering the purchase of a home security system to speak with other homeowners who have used the company. Also, third-party verification of the quality of the installation of a home alarm system is available through some insurance companies and national associations. Some local fire and police departments, as well as home owner associations may require third party inspections to ensure the systems work properly and will not set off false alarms.

Home alarm systems typically will give you the quality that you pay for, and the investment of money for a home security system requires careful research to ensure that you receive the best bargain for your money when buying a home alarm system.

Wednesday, March 29, 2006Local Government workers in the UK withdrew their labour yesterday as part of a dispute over pension entitlements. The members of 11 different trades unions were involved in the 24hr strike. As the day began they declared that support for the strike was solid. Although the strikers work for local councils, their pay and conditions are agreed nationally. The Local Government Association which represents the local councils in England and Wales declared predictions that 1.5 million people would stay away from work as “wildly optimistic”.

The Unions’ complaint is that local government workers are being treated unfavourably compared to other public sector employees. They say that agreements on pensions that have been reached with civil servants, teachers and health workers will allow those staff to continue to retire at 60 while local government staff will be forced to work until they are 65. Civil servants work for national government, teachers work for local councils but have their own pension arrangements and most health workers are employed by the state-controlled National Health Service.

The Local Government Association claims that if council workers continue to be able to retire at 60, it will increase the levels of Council Tax (a tax on people living in properties which funds a proportion of local government expenditure) by 2%.

The striking workers provide a wide range of services from assisting teachers in the class room, through inspecting kitchens for hygiene to provising care to the vulnerable in society. In some places council workers collect tolls for road tunnels or manage ferries. Mainstream media have reported on the strike all day with heavy coverage of disruption to commuters where transport has been affected. The unions have emphasised the large number of their members who are women working in low paid jobs.

The Government which regulates the scheme claimed that the early retirement provisions (called the rule of 85) were age-discriminatory and had to be removed.

The strike ended at midnight. The Unions have not declared any further strike days.

The Unions involved were AEP, AMICUS, CYWU, GMB, NAPO, NIPSA, NUJ, NUT, TGWU, UCATT and UNISON.

On Saturday, aftershocks of a powerful earthquake with reported magnitude 6.3 that struck southern Philippines on Wednesday night have increased the death toll of the extended event from five people to six due to a massive landslide following a 5.0 magnitude aftershock on Saturday.

On Wednesday, the strong tremor left five dead and, by early reports, at least 30 injured. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) of the Philippines increased the previous death toll to six following the landslide caused by the 5.0 earthquake. Meanwhile, the total reported casualties increased to 167 from a previous 93 injured people.

On Saturday, reports said Wednesday’s quake affected the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Region 11 and Region 12. Over 2,000 residents near Mount Apo in Kidapawan City have been relocated to other villages in the city since Wednesday. 76 villages were affected according to NDRRMC report on Saturday, which figured 21 injured individuals in Davao del Sur, 36 in North Cotabato, 29 in South Cotabato and seven in General Santos City. Numbers of affected residents fear to return home due to the series of aftershocks, according to CNN Philippines.

In a situational report of NDRRMC, Wednesday’s tremor damaged 143 buildings including 70 schools, 40 houses, seven health facilities, two worshiping areas, and ten commercial buildings. Rappler reported three malls in Davao City and Gaisano Mall in Digos City were damaged following aftershocks.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported the first quake occurred at 7:37 p.m. local time (1137 UTC) on Wednesday. Magnitude 6.3 according to Phivolcs, it was recorded as magnitude 6.4 by the US Geological Survey. It was followed by another earthquake an hour later; the second quake had a magnitude of 4.0 and was recorded in Sultan Kudarat. A 5.3-magnitude quake was recorded at 4:53 a.m Thursday morning (2053 Wednesday night, UTC) in Manay, Davao Oriental.

According to Manila Bulletin, Wednesday’s earthquake, at 6.3, was the strongest recorded impacting Kidapawan City. Phivolcs recorded 611 aftershocks as of Saturday 8:00 p.m. (1200 UTC).

In response, many schools were closed on Thursday and after, with the provincial government in North Cotabato suspending classes province-wide. Charles Federic Plotena, the mayor of Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat, announced classes for students ranging from kindergarten to high school, public and private, would be cancelled, while Sara Duterte, the mayor of Davao City, also cancelled graduate and post-graduate studies.

Reportedly, at least two towns —including Makilala in the province of North Cotabato— declared a state of calamity following Wednesday’s quake. Phivolcs said in its report, the western extension of Mindanao Fault makes the province seismically active, while the nearby Cotabato Trench contributes to earthquakes regionally.
