The South Downs, an area of chalk downland in southern England is to gain National Park status under measures announced earlier today.

In the announcement, Environment Secretary Hillary Benn was quoted as saying “It is fitting that in this year, the 60th anniversary of the radical legislation that gave birth to National Parks, we are celebrating an addition to the family.”

The designation has not been met with approval by some. Nigel Waterson, an MP for nearby Eastbournce, alleges to Channel 4 News that “ministers have ignored the views of almost all local authorities in the area, as well as local people.”

The new park and associated management is expected to be in place in two years’ time.

A University of Calgary research team developed a new method for extracting carbon dioxide (CO2) directly from the air — a fundamental shift in carbon capture technology enabling capture of the most common greenhouse gas from so-called diffuse sources like aircraft, trucks and automobiles that represent half of the greenhouse gases emitted globally.

Professor David Keith, Director of University of Calgary’s (UofC) Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE) and a team of researchers from UofC’s Energy and Environmental Systems Group built and operated a prototype system this summer producing results that compared favourably with commercial carbon capture systems. Two ‘provisional’ patents have been filed on the technology but Keith warns there are still “many pitfalls along the path to commercialization.”

Using a process adapted from the pulp-and-paper industry that halves the cost of CO2 air capture in their custom-built tower, Professor Keith and his team captured the equivalent of about 20 tonnes per year of CO2 (approximately equal to the yearly output of one person in North America) directly from the air with less than 100 kilowatt-hours of electricity per tonne of carbon dioxide on a single square metre of scrubbing material.

“This means that if you used electricity from a coal-fired power plant, for every unit of electricity you used to operate the capture machine, you’d be capturing 10 times as much CO2 as the power plant emitted making that much electricity,” explains Professor Keith.

A report co-authored by Keith in the American Chemical Society’s journal Environmental Science & Technology explains “nearly all current research on carbon capture and storage (CCS) focuses on capturing CO2 from large, stationary sources such as power plants. Such plans usually entail separating CO2 from flue gas, compressing it, and transporting it via pipeline to be [stored] underground.”

Using CO2 air capture technology, “a company could, in principle, contract with an oil sands plant near Fort McMurray to remove CO2 from the air and could build its air capture plant wherever it’s cheapest — China, for example — and the same amount of CO2 would be removed,” says Professor Keith in a UofC press release.

“While it’s important to get started doing things we know how to do, like wind power, nuclear power, and ‘regular’ carbon capture and storage,” Professor Keith continues, “it’s also vital to start thinking about radical new ideas and approaches to solving this problem.”

ISEEE’s Executive Director David Layzell points out that “energy-efficient and cost-effective air capture could play a valuable role in complementing other approaches for reducing emissions from the transportation sector, such as biofuels or electric vehicles.”

South Korean scientists have confirmed that they have completed the first ever commercial cloning of a dog to take place.

Bernann McKinney, who ordered the cloning for US$50,000, has said that she is pleased with the result of the cloning. “They are perfectly the same as their daddy. I am in heaven here. I am a happy person,” she said in a press conference delivered earlier today. The regular charge will be up to US$150,000, but was discounted for the first customer.

McKinney continued the press conference by saying that “Booger [the dog] had a kindness in his heart and I believe that kindness is something that can be, I don’t want to use the word reproduced, but the best way Dr Lee explained it is we can give him his body, you are going to give him the love and environment to recreate the original Booger’s personality.”

McKinney ordered five copies of her dog Booger, which she describes as her ‘partner’ and ‘friend’.

RNL Bio, which performed the cloning said that “we commemorate the world’s first commercial cloning of a pet dog, Booger,” on their website. They also stated that anyone interested in getting their pet cloned should contact them.

How to run successful Company golf days

by

Ian Mullins

1. Organising a Company golf day – The Venue…

Some will say this is probably the biggest decision you will make and it is important that the golf course you select, is both easy to reach and affordable. Start by setting a Drive time and then use a golf course directory resource to decide on a geographical shopping list of venues. Whilst many golfers (and some non-golfers) will dedicate time to attend your event, it’s unlikely that they will want to drive more than 90 minutes, so bear this in mind when choosing the venue.

2. Organising a Company golf day – Setting a budget

As you know, you get what you pay for, and running a company golf days are no exception. You will need to account for the cost of the round, the food, and any additional add-ons such as having the club PRO on hand to give advice to your guests. And of course, negotiate. Most clubs rely heavily on this sort of additional income, so dont be afraid of asking for extras e.g. discounted buggies etc.

3. Organising a Company golf day – The Planning…

It goes without saying that your priority should be on your guests and those attending. Everything you do on the day is a demonstration of how your company operates on a day to day level and as such you should ensure you brand the day properly. It’s the little touches that will make your day stand out above others, so make sure you have some goodies available for people to take away. Branded Golf Balls, Golf Tees, Umbrellas, Ball markers are all little reminders of their day, so add this to the budget.

4. Organising a Company golf day – The Format

There are many options to choose from including standardStableford format, Texas Scramble, Team Comp. Putting Comp. and a fun way to keep the group chatting is a Yellow Ball competition. It is also worth contemplating playing your golfers of a 3/4 Handicap or 7/8’s. This can be seen as a controversial move but one that is adopted my many organisers, as it levels the playing field. Finally, if you are playing team games and have a spare team of only 2 or 3, you can work around this by taking an average of the 2 or 3 players performance and that score represents the 3rd or 4th player in the team.

Organising a Company golf day – The Day…

Registration: Welcome the guests with adesignatedarea/table where you can confirm their arrival, give out the scorecards and give advice and answer any questions from your guests. If you have time, write the scorecards showing the name of the event, your company and their handicap.

The Four-balls: This is arguably the most important part, making sure the groupings complement each other. Perhaps check with the MD and key company personnel if they can recommend any preferences. Ensure you have an even spread of playing levels in each four-balls but also consider the personalities. Its no fun if you are a quiet player if youre playing partners are a noisy and chatty bunch it just wont work. N.B. Your clients will see this as a networking opportunity, so try to introduce them to new people or potential businesses partners.

Tee Time Schedule: In addition to the above, print out a copy of the groupings for displaying on the club wall. This will prevent constant questions from everyone on with whom and at what time they are teeing off. Leaving you to concentrate on the running the day.

The Briefing: Welcoming your guests officially not only is professional but this also gives you the opportunity to introduce your guests to key influencers in the company on the day. Prepare a few words: you may wish to tell the attendees about recent new business wins or new services you have to offer but dont overdo it. Were not asking you to get the PowerPoint out. Also inform the players of timings, meals times and any after dinner speeches planned.

Photography: Everybody loves having their photo taken, so consider asking someone to take professional photos of your guests whilst playing. If the budget doesnt allow for this, take the opportunity to photograph your guests when marshalling, perhaps even take video. Once back in the clubhouse, you can then set up a screen where you can show these images. This also provides a great talking point and can create a nice buzz.

Marshalling: It is advisable to discuss the marshalling of the players while they are on the course. Arrange for a buggy from the club so you can follow your golfers as they go around the course. Consider arranging for a halfway hut to offer drinks and snacks again ensuring this is branded properly. Furthermore, be aware of the time, ‘Speed of play’ is a big issue and can be the downfall of your day. The last thing you want is the first group to finish but then have to wait an hour and a half for the last group to finish. If you have more than 60 guests, discuss with the club the possibility of having a shotgun start e.g. when every four-ball starts on a different hole, this will ensure your attendee finish their round at the same time.

The Scoring: If you have more than 30 players attending your day, ensuring you have enough time to do it. You can enroll the help of the club pro or a good trick is to only ask players to hand in scorecards with 30 pts and above. This will cut down the time you spend checking scorecards and give you more time to concentrate on the winners and any count-back calculations.

Looking after the guests: Lets not forget, we all like be spoiled and catered for. So ensure your guests know where you are at all times and most of all take time to talk to them. A little conversation from the organiser can give a personal touch to proceedings and makes the guests feel cared for and welcome.

6. Organising a Company golf day – The Trophies/Prize Giving

Will there be one winner or multiple winners? Will there be a separate Ladies competition? Consider adding a Straightest Drive (Longest Drive comp. often excludes many from winning), Nearest Pins, Nearest Pin in Two (second shot), a Secret Six Holes (unmarked on the cards), Beat the Pro and many more. N.B. Given that there are normally only a few winners of silverware at these golf days, it’s important to ensure everyone feels included. Also look to add some additional prizes to the display.

Its always nice to win silverware but a few sleeves of golf balls, golf towels and gloves here and there, add to the rewards for winners. Make it clear that you will be asking the winners to come up one by one. It would be a good time to hand the camera to an able lieutenant at this point, so you can present the awards. Caution: If you are spending big money of the main trophies, think about having a smaller version made for the winner to keep. That way they dont have to take the main trophy home, meaning it never gets lost, broken or worse unreturned!

7. Organising a Company golf day – The Fund-Raising

You may decide to add a charity element to your day. There are many ways to increase your fund-raising, it could be that gathering gifts and prizes to hold a raffle. Perhaps, you can sell Mulligan Vouchers for 5 a time to be used on the day. It may also be an opportunity for a local business to add their name to things by way of a cash injection by way of sponsorship in return for some marketing around the event. Alternatively, if you have some special prizes, consider holding an auction. However, dont let either of these events take up too much time. 20 minutes is a good guide or people will lose interest.

8. Organising a Company golf day Thank Yous…

All the prizes have been given out, the meals finished, the raffle and auctions are over. Make sure you close the day by either asking one of your winners to make a speech, on behalf of the attendees or summarise the day yourself by making a thank you to all those involved in gathering prizes, scoring cards, bar staff and green-keepers. You may wish to return to the club in future years and its just good manners anyway.

9. Organising a Company golf day After the day…

Its no surprise that in the age of digital technology at the fingertips of most us, everyone likes to see photos of them playing. So consider distributing the best of these by email after the day, giving you another chance to thank everyone for coming. In todays world, this is also an opportunity to share these memories and/or content for you businesses website and social media feeds.

10. Organising a Company golf day And finally…

Dont let it become a chore. At the end of the day, if your company golf day runs smoothly you will be feeling proud of your efforts and humbled by having watched so many golfers having a good time. However, dont let yourself fall into the trap of thinking you can do it all yourself. Dont be afraid of recruiting volunteers but most of all, enjoy it!

The Social Golfer is an online golf community (TSG) that helps to find new partners as well as societies. They also help to join local golf games and events. In addition to this, they also run different golf societies and golf groups. They can even help you to track your scores, establish a handicap certificate and can also help you to locate around 25000 local and worldwide golf courses.

Friday, July 17, 2009 Following similar threats by workers at New Fabris and Nortel, workers at JLG in Tonneins, France, threatened to blow up several platform cranes. The JLG factory announced in April 2009 that it will fire 53 of its 163 workers by the end of 2009, while the remaining 110 jobs will not be secure over the next 2 years.

JLG Tonneins was acquired in 2006 with its parent JLG Industries, a maker of aerial work platforms, by the U.S.-based Oshkosh Corporation. Despite being hugely profitable in the past, production has been much reduced since 2008 with the contraction of the construction industry and lower demand for its products. Despite excellent past results the new American management demanded sweeping cuts at the company.

In the view of locals, “the company’s actions are a disgrace given the expensive perks, such as official cars, for its corporate fat cats, compared to the sacrifice, silence, and dignity demanded by the company of those it has made redundant.”

The management offered severance pay of 3,000 (US $4,200), however the workers demanded a severance package commensurate with “the wealth that their labor has generated.” Worker’s delegates requested a “supra-legal” payment of € 30,000, on Thursday 16 of July the management responded with a counter offer of € 16,000. On Thursday night the worker’s actions secured the € 30,000 settlement initially demanded.

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.

Quality accent tables can be a big investment in your home dcor. Even though youve taken every precaution to keep them looking like new, inevitably someone is going to scratch them, a stain will appear or youll find some discoloration that makes your once beautiful accent tables candidates for the dumpster.

The good news is that they dont have to suffer this fate. With a little elbow grease, the right cleaning agents and some helpful household tips, you can restore the beauty of your accent tables, even removing large scratches with relative ease.

First, lets look a the small nicks and scrapes. These can usually be covered up easily with a product you can purchase at any home improvement store made expressly for this purpose. You can also use some shoe polish or use Sharpie markers. Color in the scratch and watch it disappear. Youd be amazed at how well this works. You can also use an empty shoe polish applicator and fill it with stain that matches your finish. The process is just like polishing a pair of shoes.

Water spots can be maddening when you find them on your accent tables. However, once they have dried completely, take a soft cloth and dab some mayonnaise onto it. Rub it on the spot until it disappears. Use real mayonnaise. Miracle Whip might be tangy on a sandwich, but it wont remove a water spot.

Any colored rings can be removed with a little toothpaste. Rub it in until the ring disappears. You can also use cigarette ashes in cooking oil. But if youre not a smoker, go with the toothpaste.

Candle wax can really ruin the finish on accent tables. But they are easier to remove than you think. If candle wax gets on the surface, let it cool and harden completely. Place ice on it so it gets brittle. Then scrape it off with a plastic (not metal) spatula. Polish it a bit to remove any remaining wax.

Of course, the best way to fix the damage to your accent tables is to prevent it to begin with. Its always a good idea to have lots of coasters around so when guests are over, they can place their drinks on the coasters instead of on your accent tables.

When youre entertaining, you want to make sure that you dont place any hot serving dishes on an unprotected table. Always place a hot pad, trivet, a couple of oven mitts or at least a thick towel under the hot plate to prevent burning and marring.

If you are using candles to set the mood, make sure they have a large base to them. If not, place the candleholder on a dish or trivet or use hurricane lamps instead so hot wax doesnt spill out and onto the top of your expensive accent tables.

You shouldnt ever polish or wax your wood with cheap commercial products available at supermarkets. These can harm the surface or simply add a layer of waxy film that will collect dust. If you really like the look of polish, use one part lemon oil to three parts olive oil. It will do the job nicely and leave a nice lemony scent in the room.

Usually, a regular dusting is all that is needed to keep your tables looking terrific. If they really need a deeper cleaning use a very mild dish soap that is diluted in water. You dont need a lot of soap. In the words of an old television commercial, a little dab will do ya.

With just a little care and some light maintenance when your tables do get a nick or scratch, you should be able to keeping your furniture looking like new for years to come.

A former accountant for Oral Roberts University (ORU) has filed a lawsuit against ORU and its Board of Regents claiming he was told by Richard Roberts and his wife Lindsay to “cook the books”, hiding financial wrongdoing from authorities and the public. Trent Huddleston, the accountant, has filed suit against the school and the Robertses claiming he “was improperly and unlawfully directed to perform functions and duties in violation of state and federal law in an effort by the defendants to ‘cook the books’ and hide from the appropriate authorities and the public the continued wrongdoing, improper and illegal conduct of the defendants, and in particular, of Richard and Lindsay Roberts.”

Huddleston said that nearly $123,000 in remodeling fees for their home was paid by Oral Roberts University and Oral Roberts Ministries. In addition the lawsuit alleges $4,000 was spent on a pool table for the Robertses. Previously the Roberts were accused of illegal political and financial wrongdoing, which forced the president to step down from his positison.

Last week at a meeting called by Oral Roberts, founder of the University and former faith healer, a majority of the faculty voted against allowing Richard to serve as president.

An ORU spokesman declined to comment on latest lawsuit and the faculty meeting.

In other news, Tulsa World released emails between Richard and his political adviser and sister-in-law, Stephanie Cantees. The emails given by an anonymous source, show the two plan to gain political influence using ORU students.
