Computer security experts warn that a malicious computer worm, dubbed “Kama Sutra,” is set to wreak havoc this Friday, February 3rd on Microsoft Windows computers worldwide. Kama Sutra is designed to destroy files that end in .doc, .zip and .pdf.

The Kama Sutra worm has been spreading through cyberspace since January 16, packaged in emails with subject headings such as: “give me a kiss” and “crazy illegal sex.”

When users click an email attachment, their PCs become infected with destructive, self-replicating software. The worm affects Microsoft Windows operating systems and is programmed to go to work on the third of every month, overwriting or corrupting Microsoft files and others such as Portable Document Format (PDF) files.

“This one can damage your office files, your Microsoft Excel spreadsheets and your PowerPoint presentations,” Tino Klironomos, a computer retailer, said. “(The files will be) all gone, history.”

Computer security company LURHQ reports that there may be hundreds of thousands of machines already infected with the worm, which also goes by the monikers “BlackWorm,” “CME-24,” “Blackmal,” “Mywife.E” and “Nyxem.”

To prevent the worm, Windows users should arm themselves with anti-virus software. People can also protect their PC with up-to-date anti-virus gear and firewall protection. Free anti-virus tools are available from many anti-virus organisations. These tools can detect and remove the Kama Sutra worm from an infected machine.

Experts say: “Make sure your virus definitions are up to date. Besides being careful about opening email messages and attachments, users should back up their most valuable computer files on an external device such as a CD, zip drive or DVD.”

Steve Bass at PC World says: “Stop worrying. If you update your virus program signatures regularly, and do a weekly AV scan, I don’t think you have much to worry about…”

Other advice is not to open any messages with the subject headers “crazy, illegal sex”, “give me a kiss” and “hot movie.”

The worm will not affect machines running on non-Windows operating systems such as Mac OS X or GNU/Linux.

Many security systems reported a very small amount of vandalism, even though the threats were very high.

Century Community Charter School

by

charterschooltoday

Century Community Charter School (CCCS), located in Los Angeles County in Inglewood, California. It is a school looking above and beyond what others may be focusing on in the community. As the Bears (theyve adopted the CAL colors and mascot) strive to live up to their commitment of Achievement, Academics, and Accountability they challenge students, while providing them with the tools necessary to be able to meet and often exceed their goals. Century/LIFT provides tutoring daily until 6:00 p.m. and Saturday School twice a month. Century/LIFT and Saturday School were designed to support all students, struggling as well as high achievers. Both are paid for through a state grant and are free for students.

Operating on an annual budget of around $2.87 million, the school has 405 students (59% Hispanic, 40% African American, 1% Other) grades six to eight. The foundation of CCCS, which was established in 2004, lies in the approach they take and the vision they hold for where their students currently are and where they see them in the future.

CCCS Achievement and Accountability

When it came time to select a principal for CCCS, the Century Community Charter Schools, Inc School Board hit a home run when they selected teaching veteran Teri Delahousie Norris. She came to the position with 27 years of teaching experience under her belt, which put her in the perfect position to guide this community. She has first-hand information on how students think, what motivates them, and what would make for an effective charter school for students.. When it comes to the highly qualified teacher definition in the No Child Left Behind Act, she absolutely believes that charter school directors need more flexibility in determining what constitutes a highly qualified (HQ) teacher.

Universities are not adequately preparing teachers for urban classrooms, says Norris, Teachers must be highly qualified as-well-as highly effective in the classroom. In addition, she believes that there should be less emphasis on test scores and more emphasis on what is going on daily in classrooms. We train teachers to teach to the standards, she says. Our teachers do not feel the pressure, because it is not put on them by the Administrative team. When teachers focus on standards-based instruction the scores naturally increase

Academics

CCCS focuses on professional development, coaching, instructional leadership and the academic program using educational approach referred to as the Backward Design Model. This model focuses on effective instruction through deliberate planning that begins with the standard (What should students know, understand, and be able to do?).

Next teachers determine the acceptable evidence that will show how we know if students have achieved the desired results and met the standard. Teachers consider a range of both summative and formative to determine whether students have attained the desired understanding of the standard.

Once that is established, the educators work backward using Blooms Taxonomy to create the unit, lessons, activities, and assignments that will guide student learning. Teachers clearly articulate the learning expectations to the students to help them develop focus and self-direction as learners.

Teachers deliver lessons using multiple modalities and array of strategies that include the traditional reading, writing, and lecture using computers (Brainpop, YouTube) and Smart Boards to enhance lessons. Students work in cooperative groups, in pairs, and alone. Assessments take the form of quizzes, tests, projects, oral reports, performance, blogs, and in some cases imovies. Variety in their assessment is critical, says Norris. The teachers make sure that they use all of the modalities so that all students have access to meet or exceed the standard. In order to accomplish this teachers are provided with laptops, overhead projectors, LCD Screens, textbooks, and adequate classroom supplies.

Teachers at CCCS are not left on their own to try to implement or work through this model. Rather, the school contracted Insight Education Group to conduct yearly training sessions as well as monthly coaching visits that assist teachers with their Unit and weekly plans. Insight Education maintains its availability to facilitate planning via phone and email when they are not present at school.

Two Instructional leaders, the Principal and Mrs. Dana Means, the school Dean, also support teachers. Support includes weekly Walk Throughs, demonstration lessons, and consistent guidance when planning units and lessons.

Students take the normal CORE classes of Social Studies, English Language Arts, Mathematics (Pre-Algebra and Algebra), Science, Health and Physical Education, as well as a variety of electives that include Art, Drama, Dance, Choir, American Sign Language and Music. Seventh and Eighth Graders in good academic standing (3.5 or above) take Honors Classes. Honors classes do not increase the work, they do provide enriched learning, greater depth of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of material.

Century Community Charter School begins each day with an Advisory period where students learn about such qualities as respect, fairness, caring, citizenship, worthiness, and responsibility. Each Advisory selects a community service project to work on for the year, in this way students put their traits to work in their own community. Advisory teachers guide students in building their portfolios that include their best work in all subjects, for each semester they attend CCCS. The portfolios reinforce student achievement when they apply to High School and quash thoughts of grade inflation. .

In addition to the standards-based curriculum CCCS students lessons are extended beyond the classroom through field trips, clubs, and Saturday Enrichment that offer opportunities that make the curriculum come alive and provide opportunities they may never otherwise have. Students have seen Wicked, Ray Live, and The Sound of Music, on stage. They have visited the Museum of Tolerance, Pumpkin Patches (ever notices there are none in Urban areas?), a Dairy Farm, Aquariums and Art Museums.

Bear Community

Every successful school must have a team approach when it comes to the staff. At Century, they place an emphasis on providing a team atmosphere and enough support to keep people motivated and able to meet challenges head-on. The Administrative team believes community building is critical. Staff receive weekly bulletins on Friday so they can plan for the coming week, Families receive a Wednesday Newsletter that discusses and announces important events. The website is maintained and accurate and CCCS subscribes to Teleparent an automated phone system that makes calls to parents, in their home language. Teleparent, notifies parents in a timely manner about assignments, tests, and missed deadlines or misbehavior, it also reinforces positive grades and attitudes

Focusing on a Love and Logic strategy of rewards and consequences, the school tries to fit the crime to the punishment, when student misconduct does takes place. For example, if the student is caught chewing gum, they will have to clean the gum from the tables. If they are found to have been writing on the bathroom walls, they will have to spend time with their parent repainting them. The students are required to wear uniforms and the uniform policy is strictly upheld by Mrs. Vera Yarbrough, the schools Counseling TA. Mrs. Yarbrough is supported twice weekly by Ms. Sheri Carr, the school counselor (expense paid through a grant). Their system is simple”discuss the unacceptable behavior with students so that they understand the impact their behavior has on the school, its students, and THEIR learning.

We see the school as a community. We all take the time to talk to the kids, and they receive a lot of support, says Norris.

Looking Forward

One of the key factors in making Century a successful school is the high level of parental involvement. For starters, the school requires parents to perform 20 hours of volunteer work each year, such as answering phones, filing, or cleaning in the kitchen. The school also has an open-door policy which allows parents to visit the school and classrooms at any time and for as long as they like. This has been found to be a powerful way to motivate students, because they see their parents caring and taking an interest in their education.

Norris hopes that the work being done now will help influence demographic changes at area universities in Los Angeles. She intends to see student demographics of universities in the Los Angeles area reflect the diverse populations of the local schools.

In five years, our graduating class will be college sophomores, she adds. I see them coming back to mentor other students, become tutors, TAs, and Teachers, I see them giving back to their community. We LOVE Century Community Charter School.

Controversy has arisen over the reported presence of blue asbestos on the MV Freewinds, a cruise ship owned by the Church of Scientology. According to the Saint Martin newspaper The Daily Herald and the shipping news journal Lloyd’s List, the Freewinds was sealed in April and local public health officials on the Caribbean island of Curaçao where the ship is docked began an investigation into the presence of asbestos dust on the ship. Former Scientologist Lawrence Woodcraft supervised work on the ship in 1987, and attested to the presence of blue asbestos on the Freewinds in an affidavit posted to the Internet in 2001. Woodcraft, a licensed architect by profession, gave a statement to Wikinews and commented on the recent events.

According to The Daily Herald, the Freewinds was in the process of being renovated by the Curaçao Drydock Company. The article states that samples taken from paneling in the ship were sent to the Netherlands, where an analysis revealed that they “contained significant levels of blue asbestos”. An employee of the Curaçao Drydock Company told Radar Online in an April 30 article that the Freewinds has been docked and sealed, and confirmed that an article about asbestos ran in the local paper.

Lloyd’s List reported that work on the interior of the Freewinds was suspended on April 27 after health inspectors found traces of blue asbestos on the ship. According to Lloyd’s List, Frank Esser, Curaçao Drydock Company’s interim director, joined Curaçao’s head of the department of labor affairs Christiene van der Biezen along with the head of the local health department Tico Ras and two inspectors in an April 25 inspection of the ship. “We are sending someone so that they can tell us what happened, where it came from, since when it has been there,” said Panama Maritime Authority’s director of merchant marine Alfonso Castillero in a statement to Lloyd’s List.

The Church of Scientology purchased the ship, then known as the Bohème, in 1987, through an organization called Flag Ship Trust. After being renovated and refitted, it was put into service in June 1988. The ship is used by the Church of Scientology for advanced Scientology training in “Operating Thetan” levels, as well as for spiritual retreats for its members. Curaçao has been the ship’s homeport since it was purchased by the Church of Scientology.

According to his 2001 statement, Lawrence Woodcraft had been an architect in London, England since 1975, and joined Scientology’s elite “Sea Organization” (Sea Org) in 1986. He wrote that he was asked by the Sea Org to work on the Freewinds in 1987, and during his work on the ship “noticed a powdery blue fibrous substance approximately 1 ½” thick between the paint and the steel wall,” which he believed to be asbestos. He also discovered what he thought was blue asbestos in other parts of the ship, and reported his findings to Church of Scientology executives. Woodcraft discussed his experiences in a 2001 interview published online by the Lisa McPherson Trust, a now-defunct organization which was critical of the Church of Scientology.

The Freewinds regularly inspects the air quality on board and always meets or exceeds US standards.

Church of Scientology spokeswoman Karin Pouw responded to Radar Online about the asbestos reports, in an email published in an article in Radar on May 1. “The Freewinds regularly inspects the air quality on board and always meets or exceeds US standards,” said Pouw. She stated that two inspections performed in April “confirmed that the air quality is safe,” and asserted that the inspections revealed the Freewinds satisfies standards set by the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the U.S. Clean Air Act.

Pouw told Radar that “The Freewinds will be completing its refit on schedule.” The Church of Scientology-affiliated organization Citizens Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) had been planning a cruise aboard the Freewinds scheduled for May 8, but according to Radar an individual who called the booking number for the cruise received a message that the cruise had been delayed due to ongoing work on the ship. Citing an article in the Netherlands Antilles newspaper Amigoe, Radar reported on May 6 that a team from the United States and supervised by an independent bureau from the Netherlands traveled to Curaçao in order to remove asbestos from the Freewinds.

…if the Church of Scientology claims to have removed the blue asbestos, I just don’t see how, it’s everywhere. You would first have to remove all the pipes, plumbing, a/c ducts, electrical wiring etc. etc. just a maze of stuff.

“I stand by everything I wrote in my 2001 affidavit,” said Lawrence Woodcraft in an exclusive statement given to Wikinews. Woodcraft went on to state: “I would also comment that if the Church of Scientology claims to have removed the blue asbestos, I just don’t see how, it’s everywhere. You would first have to remove all the pipes, plumbing, a/c ducts, electrical wiring etc. etc. just a maze of stuff. Also panelling as well, basically strip the ship back to a steel hull. Also blue asbestos is sprayed onto the outer walls and then covered in paint. It’s in every nook and cranny.”

Many Scientologist celebrities have spent time aboard the Freewinds, including Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, John Travolta, Kelly Preston, Chick Corea, Lisa Marie Presley, Catherine Bell, Kate Ceberano, and Juliette Lewis. Now magazine reported that Tom Cruise has been urged to seek medical attention regarding potential asbestos exposure, however a representative for Cruise stated he has “absolutely no knowledge” of the recent asbestos controversy. Cruise, Holmes, Travolta and Preston have celebrated birthdays and other events on the Freewinds.

There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds.

In a May 15 statement to the United Kingdom daily newspaper Metro, a representative for the Church of Scientology said that “There is not now and never has been a situation of asbestos exposure on the Freewinds.” The Asbestos and Mesothelioma Center notes that agencies have recommended anyone who has spent time on the Freewinds consult with their physician to determine if possible asbestos exposure may have affected their health.

Raw blue asbestos is the most hazardous form of asbestos, and has been banned in the United Kingdom since 1970. Blue asbestos fibers are very narrow and thus easily inhaled, and are a major cause of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a form of cancer which can develop in the lining of the lungs and chest cavity, the lining of the abdominal cavity, or the pericardium sac surrounding the heart. The cancer is incurable, and can manifest over 40 years after the initial exposure to asbestos.

“This is the most dangerous type of asbestos because the fibres are smaller than the white asbestos and can penetrate the lung more easily,” said toxicologist Dr. Chris Coggins in a statement published in OK! Magazine. Dr. Coggins went on to note that “Once diagnosed with mesothelioma, the victim has six months to a year to live. It gradually reduces lung function until the victim is no longer able to breathe and dies.”

The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark has expressed an interest of extending daylight saving time in New Zealand after a petition to extend daylight saving was closed, gathering 35,000 signatures.

The petition was launched by Peter Dunne, leader of the United Future party, and Nelson city councillor, Mark Holmes in October, 2006. The petition requests “…that the House call upon the Government to provide 3 extra weeks of daylight saving to begin on the last Sunday of September and end on the first Sunday in April.”

Ms Clark says that daylight savings could be stretched at the end because our summer is now lasting through till March. Ms Clark does not support a change to the start of daylight savings. Ms Clark said, “I think the way our weather and seasons have moved around we are finding that at the start of the so-called summer it’s not the best, but we’ve just seen the most glorious Indian summer lasting well through into March and daylight savings ends in about a week’s time.”

Ms Clark also says she supports moving the summer school holidays from January to February, although she says that this would be hard to do.

The Minister for the Department of Internal Affairs, Rick Barker, is considering the extension of daylight savings, as an extension does not require any law change, instead it is done by Order in Council signed by the Governor-General, acting under section 4(1) of the Time Act 1974.

Ms Clark claims that there is a lot of public support for the extension.

If any change was to occur, it would be implemented next year, as daylight savings finishes this coming weekend.

The United States and Canada have both recently extended their daylight savings periods.

Vernon Bellecourt, once the primary spokesperson for the American Indian Movement, died recently at age 75. Bellecourt, an Ojibwa who fought for Native rights, was perhaps best known for his opposition to Native names and mascots for sports teams.

First in the headlines in 1972, Bellecourt organized a cross-country caravan of the Movement, to Washington. Once there, members of the group occupied the Bureau of Indian Affairs offices. His goal of international recognition for Aboriginal nations and their treaties found him meeting with figures like Libyan Colonel Muammar el-Qaddafi, and Palestine’s Yasir Arafat. In 1977 Leonard Peltier was convicted and sentenced to two consecutive life terms for the murder of two FBI Agents during a 1975 shoot-out on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation; Bellecourt led the campaign to free him.

Most recently, he visited Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, to discuss getting free or cheap heating oil for reservations.

His work as president of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media made a much wider known mark, though. Bellecourt emphasized that he believed such names perpetuated racial stereotypes, clouding the real identities and problems facing natives.

Teams with native-related names could almost guarantee on Bellecourt showing up at major games. He twice burned an effigy of Chief Wahoo, the Cleveland Indians baseball team mascot, and both times was arrested. When the Washington Redskins of the National Football League made the Super Bowl, Vernon was there to protest. The United States Commission on Civil Rights was critical of such names by 2001, calling them “insensitive in light of the long history of forced assimilation”. Some newspapers have stopped using the names of teams with Native origins.

None of his “big four” targets have shown any indication of changing: the Washington Redskins, the Kansas City Chiefs, the Cleveland Indians or the Atlanta Braves.

Post-season use of American Indian mascots were banned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association in 2005, suggesting the names are “hostile or abusive”. Bellecourt was pleased with the NCAA sanctions, but suggested such actions were only going “half way”.

The Florida State Seminole and the Illinois Illini were among the 18 colleges affected by the ban. Florida president T.K. Wetherell threatened legal action in response. The Florida Seminole tribes have endorsed the University’s usage of the name, but some out-of-state tribes were “not supportive”, according to the NCAA vice president for diversity and inclusion.

Born WaBun-Inini, Bellecourt died from complications of pneumonia on October 13, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States.

Google has launched an online spreadsheet site, in a private beta.

The site will allow spreadsheets to be shared between up to 10 users, which is aimed to be useful to teams and small businesses. “Many people already organise information into spreadsheets. Where they are struggling is to share it” said the product manager, Jonathan Rochelle.

Google recently bought the online word-processor Writely, launched a calendar product, as well as a desktop search tool. Many see this as them straying into Microsoft‘s markets.

Google Spreadsheets uses very advanced AJAX (Asynchronous Javascript And Xml) and Client Side Scripting to mimic very effectively it’s desktop counterparts’ functions.

It is surprisingly fast, has very good formatting and advanced formula support, but best of all it has complete support for Microsoft Excel .xls files, and very good collaboration: just enter the e-mail address and you can share easily.

Australian researchers say they have scientifically proven that stress causes sickness. The Garvan Institute in Sydney has discovered that a hormone, known as neuropeptide Y, (NPY) is released into the body during times of stress. Their findings show the hormone can stop the immune system from functioning properly.

Neuropeptide Y is one of those hormones that gets unregulated or released from neurones when stressful situations occur…it’s known for example that it regulates blood pressure and heart rates so your heart rate goes up but it hasn’t been known that it actually can affect immune cells as well,” said Professor Herbert Herzog, one of the researchers.

Herzog feels it is good to finally have proof of something people have suspected for so long.

“Now we have proven without doubt that there is a direct link and that stress can weaken the immune system and that makes you more vulnerable when you for example have a cold or flu and even in the more serious situations such as cancer can be enhanced in these situations,” said Herzog.

The Garvan Institute study centres on two key events that enable the human body to recognise foreign substances and control invaders. When our body encounters a pathogen (bacteria and viruses), the immune cells retain and interrogate suspects. Their activation is made possible by NPY. These cells then return to the lymph nodes, which are found all over the body, with information about the foreign invaders. The lymph nodes are where decisions about defence are made.

“Most of us expect to come down with a cold or other illness when we are under pressure, but until now we have mostly had circumstantial evidence for a link between the brain and the immune system,” said lead Garvan researcher, associate Professor Fabienne Mackay. “During periods of stress, nerves release a lot of NPY and it gets into the bloodstream, where it directly impacts on the cells in the immune system that look out for and destroy pathogens (bacteria and viruses) in the body.”

In the case of bacteria and viruses, TH1 cells are part of the attack team that is sent out on the ‘search and destroy’ mission. But when their job is done they need to be turned ‘off’ and the immune system reset. The same hormone, NPY, that activates the sentry cells now prompts the TH1 cells to slow down and die.

“Under normal conditions, circulating immune cells produce small amounts of NPY, which enables the immune cells on sentry duty and the TH1 immune cells to operate – it’s a yin and yang kind of situation. But too much NPY means that the TH1 attack is prevented despite the foreign invaders being identified – and this is what happens during stress,” added McKay.

The impact of stress on the body has been observed in athletes. Ph. D researcher at the University of Queensland, Luke Spence, together with the Australian Institute of Sport, studied elite and recreational athletes over five months.

They found elite athletes were more susceptible to respiratory diseases under stress.

“A lot of elite athletes put themselves through vast amounts of physical stress in their training, but also their emotional, psychological stress of feeling the pressure of Australia on their shoulders, wanting to compete and wanting to do their best,” said Spence.

It’s not just athletes who are prone to stress. Pressures at work and at home may cause emotional and mental stress that can be equally damaging. Almost a third of all work absenteeism in Australia is due to illness, costing employers over $10 billion a year.

“I think it has a huge impact for the work force and also for employers – if their employees are constantly stressed, constantly under pressure, they are more likely to get sick,” Spence said.

Further research could lead to the development of new drugs which may inhibit the action of the neuropeptide Y hormone.

Herzog warns people to minimise stress before it becomes a problem.

“Relaxation methods like yoga will help you to prevent that but there will still be people out there that are not responding to that and treatment by interfering with the system will be important,” he said. “There’s obviously some time until such a treatment will be available but this is something we will definitely work towards.”

The Garvan research will be published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, Volume 202, No. 11.

Correction — May 30, 2005 As noted below, there is no relationship between the “Piano Man” and Geoffrey Betts. While the speculative nature of this article was clearly pointed out from the beginning, Wikinews would nevertheless like to apologize to Mr. Betts for any inconvenience it may have caused. (See also Wikinews editor CGorman’s apology.)

Thursday, May 19, 2005

Wikinews reported on May 17 that several weeks earlier British police had picked up an unidentified man wandering the streets of Sheerness, United Kingdom. The man who has thus far refused to talk, has demonstrated himself to be an excellent pianist—earning him the nickname Piano Man.

Since publication of our first article, we have been contacted by a fellow wiki contributor informing us that the Piano Man may be a British actor named Geoffrey Betts. Although our contact strongly believed he knew the identity of the man and contacted the relevant authorities in regard to his belief, this has turned out to be false. While Betts was not reachable by phone or e-mail, his website was recently updated to the effect that he is not the man in question. In the meantime, the search for the identity has been narrowed down to three leads by authorities.

The original interview between Wikinews editor CGorman and contributor Steve Magruder is reproduced below.

A large quantity of Niobium was discovered at Panda Hill in Mbeya Region in Tanzania. Two companies did the prospecting assessment; one of which is Rex Well, a subsidiary of Euronet Africa of UK. Mining could start any time.

Last year’s survey by the firm indicated that the area has about 90 million tonnes of Niobium. The company would use open cast method, as most of the mineral is found near the surface.
