Safety Practices When Using Tools

redwriterA lot of us have worked for an employer and had a supervisor or boss that alwaysinsisted on safety factors. When working as a DIY at home we have a tendency tonot follow the safety rules that we did as an employee. There are certain safety rules to follow regardless of the type of tool you are using. Here are just a few. * Always use eye protection when using a tool. * Wear hearing protection if using a power tool. * Wear proper apparel, loose clothing can get caught on moving parts. * Read instructions for the tool you are using. * Be aware of your surroundings, especially people. * Always use the right tool for the job, don’t use wrench as a hammer. * Use a bag or a bucket to carry your tools when climbing a ladder. * Make sure you stand on a solid surface that don’t move. * Use a GFI circuit if using an electric tool outside. * Wear work gloves where possible when using hand tools. * If using a power tool, never carry it by the cord.When using power tools, there are certain other safety rules that apply to the particular tool or equipment that you are using.TABLE SAW * Never stand directly in front of the saw when in operation. Stand to the side so that any particles that fly out from the wood will either miss you or will not hit you in the face. * Always use a sharp blade. * Wear a face mask if there is no dust collection system. * Always use a push stick or push block. Do not feed material thru by hand. * Do not try to adjust the saw while it is running. * Do not leave the saw until the blade has stopped turning. * Always use the fence or miter gauge, do not make cuts free hand. * Unplug the saw from power source when making adjustments or when not using.Electric Tools * Never carry electric tools by their cord. * Don’t jerk or yank the cord from its power receptacle. * Don’t power an electric tool from an outside receptacle unless it is a GFI. * Make sure switch is in off position before connecting to power source. * Do not leave tool running or unattended when not in use. * Always disconnect tool from power source before leaving the area.Air Tools * Never point an air tool at someone especially a nail gun. * Make sure pressure being used does not exceed manufacturer’s specification. * Never carry and air tool by its hose. * Use only the attachments that the tool is designed for. * Turn off compressor and disconnect hose from tool when finished.There are many more safety features that we should adhere to when using any kindof power tool but they all can’t be put in this article. The thing to rememberis to read the owners manual and/or operating instructions before using any power tool.
