Don’t throw out those worn-out jeans. Save that damaged cocktail dress. These are the hidden treasures that, combined with some old throw pillows, turn into stylish accents for your home. You can add style to a ho-hum room by simply pulling some old clothes out of your closet. All you need to pull off a low-cost throw pillow makeover are some basic tools:

– Old pillows

– Old clothes – A cloth tape measure – Old newspaper or tissue paper – A sewing machine – A properly sized sewing machine needle – Matching thread – Matching zipper

Before you start collecting your supplies, it’s a good idea to consider the look you want to create. What is the style of the room you are adding these accent pillows to? Formal, Victorian, country, sophisticated, rustic-each of these decorating schemes demand a different kind of accent.

Here are some tips for picking the right clothes for different decorating schemes:

Formal: Choose clothes that have sophisticated textures-silks, damasks, jacquards, velvets. Clothing designs that have simple, classic lines will make pillow covers that have the necessary elegance to fit within a formal living room or bedroom.

Victorian: Choose clothes with tucks, ruffles and/or lace. Plain silks and velvets are typical Victorian fabrics. Taffeta and chintz are also typical Victorian fabrics. Look for embroidery that uses silk thread. Victorian embroidery is usually glossy.

Country: Choose clothes in natural fabrics. Checks, plaids, solids and florals all fit well in a country theme. Ruffles are common and less delicate forms of lace are seen everywhere. Look for garments that combine these elements. And don’t overlook the potential of denim in all the many colors it comes in. Country embroidery is usually cotton or wool.

Sophisticated: Choose clothes with shiny finishes. Metallics, sequins, and leathers can all say cutting edge. These fabrics are sometimes more difficult to work with, but choosing the right sewing machine needle can make a major difference.

Rustic: Choose clothes that have an outdoors’ man feel. Tweeds, wools, coarse weaves, and suede support a rustic ambiance. Distressed leather and sweater knits also say rustic. Denim may fit into this look as well.

Once you have chosen the right clothes. The next step is to decide whether you want to use a zipper, overlap the fabric at the back of the pillow, or hand stitch the opening closed. I prefer using an invisible zipper for square and rectangular pillows, because it’s also a lot easier to figure measurements and I can wash the covers if necessary. I can also design my pillows to be viewed two ways. When I feel in the mood for the more decorative side, I can have that side facing out. When my mood changes, I can flip the pillow to a plain version.

Now, it’s time to take measurements. I take a cloth tape measure and measure the width and height of the throw pillow. I add one inch to each of these measurements. This provides 1/2-inch of ease all around, so the cover isn’t too tight. I like to make a paper pattern using old newspaper or tissue paper. That way I can divide the pattern into pieces.

It’s rare to find a garment that will let you cut out a square in one piece. This is where creativity comes in. If you divide your pattern into pieces, you can create a unique pillow cover that takes advantage of any special seams or design elements in the garment. For example, you can position a pocket somewhere on the pillow (even one that was hidden in the seam). The only rule that you must remember is that every edge of the pattern piece needs a seam allowance. I recommend that you add 1/2-inch or 5/8-inch. You can use notches to mark which pieces match each other.

You will need two faces for each pillow-front and back. Before you can assemble the pillow cover, you have to sew each face completely so it forms one square (or rectangle or circle). Now, using an invisible zipper foot, stitch one side of the zipper to the front piece, with the zipper to the side you want facing out. Then match the back piece so the zipper lines up properly and stitch the other side in place. Now you can stitch the two halves together. If you have any questions, look at the instructions for installing an invisible zipper in a garment. I find that if I start at the bottom of the zipper and stitch all the way around the pillow until I reach the zipper pull, I get good results. Just remember to leave the zipper open, or you will have trouble turning the cover right side out. Trim bulk out of the corners and turn right side out. Insert the pillow, zip, and you have a neat, stylish pillow that looks good from either side.

If you prefer to have an overlap on the back side of the pillow, make two copies of your pattern. Cut the second pattern in half. Add four inches along the cut edge. After you cut the fabric, fold two inches of the fabric to the wrong side on each piece. Stitch the raw edge in place. Now, overlap the two pieces so that they are the same size as the front piece. Sew together along the outside edges. Trim bulk out of the corners and turn right side out. Insert the pillow, and you have a stylish new accent pillow for almost no cost.

If you decided to stitch your pillow cover closed and use neither a zipper nor an overlap, place the front and back pieces together, right sides touching. Stitch around the outside edges, leaving an opening that is about 4-inches smaller than the pillow’s measurement on that edge. Trim out the bulky corners, turn right side out, and insert the pillow. Slip stitch the opening closed by hand.

There you have it. Stylish pillows that you would never find anywhere else. You will be the envy of all your friends.

Supporters of jailed priest Jean-Juste say that he needs medical treatment in the United States. His attourney, Bill Quigley, told reporters that the priest, who was considered a potential presidential candidate before his arrest and long detainment, may have cancer and should be released so that he can seek medical attention in the United States. A doctor, Dr. John Carroll, who examined Jean-Juste said that an abnormal white blood cell count, as well as swelling in his neck and under his arms could be early signs of cancer. The government of interim President Alenxandre said that their doctors have examined the priest as well and said no signs of cancer exist.

Jean-Juste has been in jail since July when he was arrested at a funeral of a popular Haitian journalist and poet. He was originally detained for questioning related to the murder but also allegations of illegal weapons possessions have been brought up. He’s yet to be charged in any crimes. The doctor who made the claim of possible cancer is a supporter of Jean-Juste and some might think that this is an exaggeration to allow Jean-Juste out of Haiti to plan his political future.

Heavy rains have started on Wednesday early morning through the most of central and southern Chile. At least 29 millimeters were reported by ONEMI in the Bío Bío Region in Wednesday morning; thirteen milimeters in Temuco and 8.8 in Chillán. It has been worsen by the low temperatures. The rains have affected thousands of people that lost their homes after the great 8.8 earthquake and subsequent tsunami earlier this year. In Chiguayante, firefighters emptied a camp that was completely inundated by the rains. It is expected that the downfalls will provoke chills and respiratory problems in children and the elderly. The rains have damaged some roads in Pichilemu, Wikinews’ Diego Grez reported.

President Sebastián Piñera has visited some locations affected by the rains, including Chocholgue, San Pedro de La Paz, Constitución, and Maule. People told him and Interior Minister Rodrigo Hinzpeter that the mediaguas, or small houses, given out by the government don’t block out the water and humidity. There are also people that haven’t received tents or mediaguas yet. The government announced that ambulances will constantly patrol the cities.

Meanwhile, an earthquake hit the area, with the epicenter offshore of Maule, 65 kilometers northwest of Cauquenes, at 11:24 am local time (15:24 UTC), with a depth of 30.1 kilometers. The USGS reported the quake measured magnitude 4.9, although the University of Chile Geological Survey reported it as 6.1. There was no tsunami warning.

Peter Ormond is running for the Green Party of Ontario in the Ontario provincial election, in the Hamilton Centre riding. Wikinews’ Nick Moreau interviewed him regarding his values, his experience, and his campaign.

Ormond did not answer three questions: “Which of your competitors do you expect to pose the biggest challenge to your candidacy? Why? What makes you the most desirable of all candidates running in the riding?”, “Are the property taxes in your riding at a fair level for the amount of services received in the municipality?”, and “Of the decisions made by Ontario’s 38th Legislative Assembly, which was the most beneficial to your this electoral district? To the province as a whole? Which was least beneficial, or even harmful, to your this riding? To the province as a whole?”

Stay tuned for further interviews; every candidate from every party is eligible, and will be contacted. Expect interviews from Liberals, Progressive Conservatives, New Democratic Party members, Ontario Greens, as well as members from the Family Coalition, Freedom, Communist, Libertarian, and Confederation of Regions parties, as well as independents.

No one is blessed with the ability to see into the future. Unexpected and urgent emergencies can seemingly fall out of the sky or burst up from the ground. However, usually a car needs an emergency repair or an on the job or school expense pops up. The thing about these circumstances is that they need cash fast to fix.

If you have a good job history and make a decent income, getting your hands on a cash advance loan should not be a big problem and they are gaining in popularity in recent years. To make these loans available as quickly as possible, faxless payday loans are being offered by cash advance lenders. As you set about getting a faxless cash advance loan, here is some guidance.

No Need for a Never-Ending Debt Trap

Just because you need cash fast and want to avail yourself of a faxless cash advance loan, you need not get into a never-ending debt trap. These types of loans are attractive because the borrower can usually have the money in their account within 24 hours of filing. Many of the best lenders are available online with competitive rates. That is also the easiest place to shop and compare rates.

This instantaneous cash availability contributes to an easy repayment loan environment for demanding bills. However, there are some stringencies to be overcome before qualifying for faxless loans. While these loans are available to every person on the street, only those with a constant work history earning more than $12,000 per annum usually qualify to get the loan. Also, the applicant must be of legal age and usually a checking account is required. Be aware that faxless cash advance loans do come with very high interest rates, often up to 30% or more.

Faxless Cash Advance Loans Can Improve Credit

If you have a poor credit history, taking a faxless cash advance loan can even help you improve your credit score. Most non-bank lenders do not require a good credit score nor to they often run a credit check. Almost anyone can apply and it is easy to meet the benchmarks. Depending on how much you make a month, you could get a loan for $1500.

Also, you will not need to come up with any collateral or security to cover the loan. That is, you will not need to offer property such as real estate or a late model car. You will be asked to hand over post-dated checks. The amounts you will have to put on these checks will include the principle plus interest. Usually, depending on your pay periods and other circumstances, these faxless loans will be paid off within two to four weeks. The lender will deposit the checks for payments.

More Lenders Mean Better Rates

More and more lenders are stepping into the growing market for cash advance loans. Since there is more competition, rates can go lower. The borrower will be able to shop around for the best rates. Now that you know how, it should be easy for you to get a cash advance loan when the emergency arises.

On Sunday, a boat ferrying people to a floating casino in the Gulf of Mexico caught fire and burned near New Port Richey, Florida, US. All 50 passengers aboard abandoned ship and jumped into the sea, but one died in hospital that evening.

Beth Fifer, assistant chief executive of the Tropical Breeze Casino Cruise, said that the fire started at about 3:30 PM, local time, as the boat was outbound to the casino. According to Gerard DeCanio, the police chief of Port Richey, the captain saw smoke coming from the engine and turned back, then grounded the boat in shallow water.

The boat was rapidly engulfed in flames. Those aboard had to jump about ten feet into waist-high water and swim or wade ashore to safety. The police said that about fifteen were treated at local hospitals, including for possible hypothermia from exposure to the cold sea water. The one fatality, a 42-year-old woman, went to the emergency room at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point hours later and died at 10:42 p.m., according to Kurt Conover, a spokesman for the medical center and Kevin Doll, a spokesman for the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

Passenger Qaadia Culbreath told WFLA-TV that he couldn’t swim and didn’t see any life jackets, so he found himself “dangling off the metal hanger in the front of the boat because I didn’t want to let go”. Andrew Fossa, deputy fire chief of Pasco County, described locals who assisted the passengers as they scrambled to shore as “phenomenal”.

According to police chief DeCanio, the boat captain had reported engine trouble on earlier trips. Fifer said, “It would’ve never left the dock if we knew something was wrong with it.” The Coast Guard has announced that they will review maintenance records. The casino operates offshore, requiring a boat to ferry gamblers to and fro, because casino gambling is not legal in the state of Florida.

Over 60 miners were killed in an abandoned gold mine shaft near Welkom, in the Free State province of South Africa, after a fire broke out inside the mine.

36 bodies from the Harmony Gold mining company Eland mine shaft were brought up earlier on the weekend from depths up to 1.4 kilometers (1 mi). On Tuesday, 25 more bodies were recovered by other illegal workers.

“We suspect there was a fire on the 18th of May. We never saw any smoke. Over the weekend [30 May] we were informed by other illegal miners that people had died,” said Tom Smith, Chief Operating Officer for Harmony’s South Region, “The bodies are not burnt. It seems more of a case of gas or smoke inhalation. I don’t know if there are any more bodies down there, we just have to wait.”

The workers may have died from poisonous gasses, smoke inhalation, suffocation, cave-ins or carbon monoxide poisoning.

Harmony gold mine will not send anyone in to the mine as the conditions are extremely dangerous and abandoned shafts are without safety equipment. Illegal workers may gain access bypassing security at one mine site, and exit via a series of interconnected underground tunnels many miles away.

Harmony is internationally the fifth largest gold mining company and has bought up old, abandoned mines.

Police were seeking relatives to help identify the bodies, and are instigating an investigation into the circumstances.

Almost 300 “gold pirates” were arrested over the past two weeks at the Eland mine shaft alone. Thousands of illegal workers can be underground, and remain working for weeks and months continuously. “These are ex-miners and unemployed people – we need to target the syndicates,” said Smith.

There are over 4.18 million unemployed in South Africa due to the economic decline, and another 1 million may soon join the ranks.

Susan Shabangu, the minister of mining, extended her condolences.

Welkom, with a population of over 400,000 is located 160 kilometers (99 mi) northeast of Bloemfontein, the provincial capital.

Wikinews reporter Iain Macdonald today interviewed Petros Tzomakas, a Greek far-left activist and member of Xekinima, which is the Greek division of the Committee for a Workers’ International. The party is a member of Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA).

Tzomakas also sits on his local 5th Athens Municipal District committee, which is a joint effort by left-wing parties including SYRIZA, the Anticapitalist Left Cooperation for the Overthrow and a number of other political parties to oppose austerity measures proposed by the government. All left-wing parties in the country except the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) are involved. Tzomakas explained that the KKE prefers not to co-operate with other radical left-wing groups.

The interview comes amid tensions in cash-strapped Greece, where the government is introducing controversial austerity measures to try to ease the nation’s debt-problem. An international rescue package has been prepared by European Union member states and the International Monetary Fund – should Greece require a bailout; protests have been held against government attempts to manage the economic situation.

The Australian Senate has passed legislation to force a national nuclear waste dump on the Northern Territory (NT). Despite opposition from Aboriginal land owners, the NT government, environment groups and Labor the Federal Government can now officially build a nuclear waste repository in the NT after the legislation for the waste dump passed the Senate today. The Radioactive Waste Management Bill was passed with 34 in favour and 29 against.

The two bills override the Northern Territory’s objection to the radioactive waste dump after the South Australian government opposed a previous preferred site near Woomera. According to Federal Labor opposition MP, Warren Snowdon, it is the first time since 1978 that Territory law has been overridden. “It’s an absolute disaster and it shows contempt for the Northern Territory community, it shows absolute contempt for land use planning in the Northern Territory,” he said.

The Territory Labor Government has been a resolute opponent of the plan, saying a nuclear dump will expose residents to a new security threat.

The Chief Minister of the Northern Territory, Clare Martin, says transporting nuclear waste to the Territory would make it vulnerable to terrorists looking to make a dirty bomb. Ms Martin says experts on the issue have raised concerns about security at a national nuclear waste facility.

She says scientific debate played no part in the Federal Government’s decision to build a dump in the Territory and nuclear waste could be a target while it is being moved to the Territory. “You’d have to look at how far around a country you’re going to be transporting things like intermediate nuclear level waste,” she said.

“And if you’re going to put such a nuclear facility in the middle of central Australia you’ve got to get the waste there by road and that’s thousands of kilometres.” She says the Commonwealth should not expect any cooperation from her Government.

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation’s (ANSTO) Craig Pierce says there would be no point trying to use low level waste to make a dirty bomb because the waste is mostly gloves and labcoats. “It simply would make no sense to get this material and want to blow it up,” he said.

“It would have no impact at all. On the intermediate level, that will have a high level of security when it is transported. It won’t be transported for very far on road, on land, and it will have an appropriate level of security.”

The Australian Conservation Foundation said it expected community anger would escalate, now the bills had passed. “Last year the federal government gave the people of the NT an absolute categorical assurance there would be no dump in the NT,” ACF nuclear campaigner Dave Sweeney said. “Today they have broken this promise and bulldozed through bad law in an attempt to gag community concern.”

“Under the government’s proposal, 130 truckloads of radioactive waste would be driven from Sydney’s Lucas Heights reactor, through NSW, to an as-yet unnamed site in the NT in the first year alone, with dumping to continue for decades,” he said.

The Australian Greens say the legislation could be manipulated to allow waste from other countries to be stored in the Northern Territory. The party is angry that amendments they proposed were not considered when the bill was passed. Greens Senator Rachel Siewert says the legislation is not strong enough.

“In the bill, there were some provisions to supposedly keep out international waste,” she said. “We don’t think they go far enough and that they are open to manipulation and interpretation. So what we were trying to do is absolutely positively ensure that international waste will not be brought into this facility.”

The NT Environment Centre’s Gary Scott has hinted at civil disobedience similar to that seen during the anti-uranium mining protests at Jabiluka. “I don’t think Territorians are going to take this lying down unless that is in front of bulldozers,” Mr Scott said.

The Centre’s Peter Robertson has emphasised the importance of the waste dump for the federal government to realise its plans for a second nuclear reactor. “If we get the dump, Sydney gets the reactor”. Establishing a national waste dump is a precondition for the operating license for the proposed OPAL nuclear reactor which will replace Lucas Heights in Sydney.

Robertson pointed out that the issue of waste is creating an international crisis for the nuclear industry, with no storage plans for the more than 250,000 tonnes of high-level radioactive waste currently in existence.

A detailed study of three Defence sites – Fishers Ridge, 43 km south-east of Katherine, Harts Range, 100 km north-east of Alice Springs, and Mount Everard, 27 km north-west of Alice Springs – will be conducted next year, with the facility to be operational by 2011.

Traditional owners of Athenge Alhere – an estate group of the Arrernte Nation – have voiced their dissent to the nuclear dump and say they don’t want waste from Sydney’s Lucas Heights nuclear reactor brought to their land. “Because the land we take care of, because all our ancestors lived in this land and hunted on this land as well, so it’s mainly because of the animals and the next generation of our kids and their children, so we still say no,” traditional owner Benedict Stevens said.

Coalition MPs, including Northern Territory Country Liberal senator Nigel Scullion, secured a number of amendments to the bill. They included the ability of the NT government and indigenous land councils to decide on other site options, a prohibition on the storage of high level and overseas waste and the free storage of the NT’s own waste.

The South Australian Government says tenacity staved off a nuclear dump on its land. SA Environment Minister, John Hill, says there could be a federal election before the facility’s finally built. “It will take them some time to construct this facility and that gives you some opportunities,” he said.

Mr Hill says waste should be stored closer to Lucas Heights in Sydney where it is generated. Radioactive waste is currently stored at over 100 locations across the country, including in hospital basements in major capital cities and at universities.

Update: NT farmers have threatened to take action if a site near their farms is selected for the dump. Fishers Ridge, south of Katherine, is one of three Commonwealth sites earmarked for the facility. Sharon Shaw’s farm 12 kilometres from the Fishers Ridge site. “The thing that worries us the most, it’s on top of a Tindal Aquifer which really concerns us in the fact that there’s many sink holes that turn up every wet as the ground is always shifting,” she said. “Any normal person without an environmental degree or anything would realise that this ground is unstable.”
