Acne pimples do not affect everyone the same way or with the same level of severity. While it is true that majority of the people will or have experienced acne pimples at one point or another in their lives, their experience with acne will certainly differ to a great extent. For some pimples will be noting more than minor annoyance during prom or first date, for others it will become a life long battle. This is the reason why there are many different types of acne pimple treatments on the market including prescription and non-prescription.

The first thing to understand about acne is that not all acne is the same. In fact acne is graded on a scale of one to eight, with one being very minor and eight being quite severe. Minor acne such as small pimples known as Whiteheads or blackheads can be treated with various types of scrubs or skin exfoliants available of the counter at your local supermarket or drugstore whereas large acne lesions known as cysts will require specialized treatment, surgery or extra strong acne medicine to bring it under control.Over the counter acne treatments available at your local drug store, super market or online for that matter are generally comprised of either one of two main ingredients including Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid. Neither seems to have an huge advantage over the other, however treatments containing salicylic acid tend to be preferred by people with sensitive skin over BP based treatments. Salicylic Acid appears to be far gentler on sensitive skin than its counterpart. Regardless of the treatment type, the ultimate goal of any acne treatment is to accelerate the skin exfoliating process so that the pore can be cleared quickly and acne can be prevented or minimized. While minor to moderate amount of acne can be treated or controlled with over the counter treatments, it is not the case with extreme cases of acne lesions. Large lumps or cysts emerging from deep within the skin can only be treated with professional medical help. This is where acne medicine such as Accutane come to the rescue. While Accutane is know to have many dangerous side-effects it is one of the best known medications for treating severe cases of acne. Minor to moderate acne can be treated with store bought treatments, but when it comes to treating severe acne, it is your best bet to consult with your doctor and have her determine the best course of action for you.

They were a happy family, never seen them argue or nothing

A father shot his two daughters and wife, then committed suicide yesterday in Erie, Western Pennsylvania according to police.

The Erie police responded to a call from the house at 11 a.m. on Saturday and found a 29-year-old man, a 27-year-old woman and two children, ages four and seven dead of gunshot wounds. A two-year old boy was hospitalised with minor injuries; he was reportedly shot in the ear.

A resident, Kevin Klino, who lives one block away from the crime scene and heads the Citizens Reunited Against Crime group told the Associated Press, “I was outside just leaving my house when I heard gunfire, four, five, or six shots… and seconds later, cop cars came flying by.” Klino was quick to talk to the police and informed the community that a gunman was not on the loose, rather, a suspected murder-suicide.

Klino also added, “This is an impoverished neighborhood with a lot of good people in it. People were just walking through the neighborhood stunned. It’s not even a tragedy, it’s worse than that… when you’ve got kids involved, it just numbs you, shocks you”

It can be difficult to be John Reed.

Christopher Hitchens called him a “Bin Ladenist” and Cathy Young editorialized in The Boston Globe that he “blames the victims of terrorism” when he puts out a novel like Snowball’s Chance, a biting send-up of George Orwell‘s Animal Farm which he was inspired to write after the terrorist attacks on September 11. “The clear references to 9/11 in the apocalyptic ending can only bring Orwell’s name into disrepute in the U.S.,” wrote William Hamilton, the British literary executor of the Orwell estate. That process had already begun: it was revealed Orwell gave the British Foreign Office a list of people he suspected of being “crypto-Communists and fellow travelers,” labeling some of them as Jews and homosexuals. “I really wanted to explode that book,” Reed told The New York Times. “I wanted to completely undermine it.”

Is this man who wants to blow up the classic literary canon taught to children in schools a menace, or a messiah? David Shankbone went to interview him for Wikinews and found that, as often is the case, the answer lies somewhere in the middle.

Reed is electrified by the changes that surround him that channel through a lens of inspiration wrought by his children. “The kids have made me a better writer,” Reed said. In his new untitled work, which he calls a “new play by William Shakespeare,” he takes lines from The Bard‘s classics to form an original tragedy. He began it in 2003, but only with the birth of his children could he finish it. “I didn’t understand the characters who had children. I didn’t really understand them. And once I had had kids, I could approach them differently.”

Taking the old to make it new is a theme in his work and in his world view. Reed foresees new narrative forms being born, Biblical epics that will be played out across print and electronic mediums. He is pulled forward by revolutions of the past, a search for a spiritual sensibility, and a desire to locate himself in the process.

Below is David Shankbone’s conversation with novelist John Reed.

Two dog attacks in a week puts Spotsylania County authorities in the spotlight to take action on pet owners for their dog’s behavior. In unrelated incidences, an elderly woman was killed and another woman was bitten. Three dogs have been shot dead by police.

An 82 year old woman was walking her Shih Tzu breed of dog in her front yard last week when she came under attack by three Pit Bulls. She died being transported to the hospital after police responded and shot two of the attacking dogs. They later captured the third dog and euthanized it.

More recently, a 31 year old woman was bitten on her hand during a fight that ensued between two Pit Bulls in her back yard. The responding police officer shot the aggressor dog.

Public outcry over the death of the elderly woman stirred procecutors to charge the dogs’ owner, Deeana Large, with involuntary manslaughter. This is a first for the Commonwealth of Virginia where charges that carry a maximum penalty of 10 years are leveled in a case involving a pet’s owner. In order to gain an indictment, prosecuters will have to prove the dogs’ owner was criminally negligent. In the biting incident, the attacking dog’s owner faces a misdemeanor charge of letting the dog run at large.

Deeana Large, who initially said she owned only 1 of the 3 dogs involved in the mauling case, has not yet been formally charged and awaits indictment. Investigators in the case say there were earlier reports of her dogs allegedly killing a German Shepard and a kittten in her neighborhood. Complaints by neighbors spurred an animal control officer to be looking for the dogs at the time the woman was killed.

If someone advised you to go for modular housing instead of regular construction, what would be your reaction? Would you be all for prefabricated homes or would you be convinced that this is not a very sound suggestion? There are many myths that are associated with the building of manufactured houses; and this is what clouds people’s capacity to take a pro-manufactured houses decision.

1. The manufactured homes are built at supersonic speed – it is true that these manufactured units are built faster than your regular home. This is because these units are built indoors, in factories with controlled climate conditions. This means that the outside weather never affects the pace of the work, which often cuts the building time by almost half. Normally, a manufactured unit would take about 6-8 months from start to the day you could shift inside the house. This is fast – but it definitely not something at supersonic speed.

2. Factory built homes enjoy highest quality – yes, it is true that the materials used in manufacturing homes and the ones used to build a regular house are hugely different. The quality of the former is better because it is inspected at every stage of its making. However, this does not mean that stick-built house when built right is any less qualitative. The only difference is that it is highly unlikely to find that a manufactured home is not well made.

3. One can do exactly what you want – this is one of the greatest advantages with the manufactured units. You can just mold it into anything you wanted; your home could be anything you have dreamed about for a long time. The flexibility in design is there but you still need architectural designs and approval from respective authorities.

4. Energy efficient home – when you construct your house panel by panel you would be able to ensure that it complies with all the rules and regulations that pertain to building homes. While doing so, you could particularly pay attention and close the gaps that could imbalance your energy efficiency around your home. This means that you need to pay attention to the design and make adequate efforts to build your home; it just does not come inbuilt.

5. Cost efficiency – it is true that the manufactured homes are definitely cheaper than the regularly built ones. However, the manufactured homes are not exactly cheap. The cost of such house would come down by certain percentage, but it by no means cheap.

6. You can make as many changes as you please – for many the main attraction for choosing manufactured homes to the regular ones is because you can change anything and everything as per your whim and fancy. However, it is not so. No matter what type of house you choose, it is expensive to finish and not-so-easy to modify once erected.

7. Easy to move – it is true that the modular construction could be packed and shifted with relative ease. While it is true that moving a modular home is possible while the other type is not, it is not true that it could easily shifted to a new location. Packing, unpacking and reinstallation take a lot of time.

Correction — January 10, 2009 This article incorrectly states that Mr Madoff attended Hofstra University Law School. His education was actually with Hofstra College, which he graduated from in 1960.

Friday, December 12, 2008

Top broker and Wall Street adviser Bernard L. Madoff, aged 70, was arrested and charged by the FBI on Thursday with a single count of securities fraud, also known as stock fraud and investment fraud. He allegedly told senior employees of his firm on Wednesday that his $50 billion business “is all just one big lie” and that it was “basically, a giant Ponzi scheme (since at least 2005).” Mr. Madoff faces up to 20 years imprisonment and a fine of up to $5 million. FBI agent Theodore Cacioppi said Mr. Madoff’s investment advisory business had “deceived investors by operating a securities business in which he traded and lost investor money, and then paid certain investors purported returns on investment with the principal received from other, different investors, which resulted in investors’ losses of approximately $50 billion dollars.”

The former chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market is also the founder and primary owner of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, the closely-held market-making firm he launched in 1960. The firm is one of the top market maker firms on Wall Street. He founded his family firm with an initial investment of $5,000, after attending Hofstra University Law School. He saved the money earned from a job lifeguarding at Rockaway Beach in Queens and a part time job installing underground sprinkler systems.

A force in Wall Street trading for nearly 50 years, he has been active in the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), a self-regulatory organization for the U.S. securities industry. His firm was one of the five most active firms in the development of the NASDAQ, having been known for “paying for order flow,” in other word paying a broker to execute a customer’s order through Madoff. He argued that the payment to the broker did not alter the price that the customer received. He ran the investment advisory as a secretive business, however.

Dan Horwitz, counsel of Mr. Madoff, in an interview, said that “he is a longstanding leader in the financial-services industry with an unblemished record; he is a person of integrity; he intends to fight to get through this unfortunate event.” Mr. Madoff was released on his own recognizance on the same day of his arrest, after his 2 sons turned him in, and posting $10 million bail secured by his Manhattan apartment. Without entering any plea, the Court set the preliminary hearing for January 12.

Madoff’s hedge fund scheme may rank among the biggest fraud in history. When former energy trading giant Enron filed for bankruptcy in 2001, one of the largest at the time, it had $63.4 billion in assets. The scheme would dwarf past Ponzis, and it would further be nearly five times the telecommunication company WorldCom fraud and bankruptcy proceedings in 2002.

The Securities and Exchange Commission filed a separate civil suit on Thursday against Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities and its eponymous founder Mr. Madoff. It was docketed as “U.S. v. Madoff,” 08-MAG-02735, by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (Manhattan). SEC, New York associate director of enforcement, Andrew M. Calamari, asked the judge to issue seizure orders on the firm and its assets, and appoint a receiver. The SEC pleads, among others, that “it was an ongoing $50 billion swindle; our complaint alleges a stunning fraud that appears to be of epic proportions.” It further accused the defendant of “paying returns to certain investors out of the principal received from other, different investors” for years. Madoff’s hedge fund business had previously claimed to have served between 11 and 25 clients and had $17.1 billion in assets under management. But virtually all of the assets were missing.

United States District Court for the Southern District of New York Louis L. Stanton on Thursday appointed Lee Richards, a Manhattan lawyer, as the firm’s receiver. A hearing is set for Friday, for a ruling on the SEC’s petition to grant plenary powers to the receiver over the entire firm, and an absolute asset sequestration.

Doug Kass, president of hedge fund Seabreeze Partners Management said that “this is a major blow to confidence that is already shattered — anyone on the fence will probably try to take their money out.”

San Jose, California — A woman eating a bowl of chili at a Wendy’s restaurant bit into a chewy bit that turned out to be a human finger. She immediately spat it out, warned other patrons to stop eating, and upon recognizing the object as a finger, vomited.

“I’m more of a Carl’s Jr. person,” the 39-year-old Las Vegas woman, Anna Ayala, told Knight Ridder. She said this incident was her first visit to a Wendy’s restaurant. Ayala described how she found the finger, “Suddenly something crunchy was in my mouth,” she continued, “and I spit it out.”

According to Devina Cordero, 20, after Ayala found the finger, she ran up to her and Cordero’s boyfriend and said, “Don’t eat it! Look, there’s a human finger in our chili.”

“We went up to the counter and they told us it was a vegetable,” Cordero continued. “The people from Wendy’s were poking it with a spoon.”

The restaurant is located at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose.

Wikinews reporter David Vasquez drove his car up to the drive-thru menu and found that chili was still on the menu, at a price of US$1.19 for a small serving. He also witnessed workers unloading supplies from a semi-trailer truck in the restaurant’s parking lot, and carting them into the back door of the establishment.

According to Ben Gale, director of environmental health for Santa Clara County, the finger did not come from any of the employees at the restaurant. “We asked everybody to show us they have 10 fingers and everything is OK there,” he said. The found portion of the finger likely belonged to a woman because of its long and manicured fingernail, also found in the food.

Officials seized the food supply at the restaurant and are tracing it back to the manufacturer, where they believe the finger may have gotten mixed in with the raw ingredients used to prepare the chili. The restaurant’s operators were later permitted to re-open after preparing new chili prepared from fresh ingredients.

As this story was filed, there was no mention of the incident on the Wendy’s corporate web site. Wendy’s issued a statement through a spokesman.

“Food safety is of utmost importance to us,” said Wendy’s spokesman Joe Desmond. He referred to the incident as an “unsubstantiated claim.”

“We are cooperating fully with the local police and health departments with their investigation. It’s important not to jump to conclusions. Here at Wendy’s we plan to do right by our customers,” Desmond said.

According to county health officials, the unfortunate woman who bit into the finger is doing fine, despite her initial reaction. Officials also noted that the finger would have been cooked at a high enough temperature to destroy any viruses.

The Santa Clara county medical examiner reported that the finger had a solid fingerprint, although investigators did not say if a search of fingerprint databases would be performed to find the owner of the finger.
